BoatWiki - Definitions

Definition

A yacht can be defined as a sizeable luxury vessel with expanded living quarters that is typically used for pleasure cruising. It can be propelled either mechanically, by sail or both simultaneously. Especially large yachts are also known as mega yachts, super yachts, and luxury yachts.

Meaning

There is no designated threshold for the length of a yacht, but any vessel over 35 to 40 feet in length that is not easily trailered may qualify. Yachts are mostly designed for recreational or pleasure cruising, but can also be used commercially.

Context

Most yachts are nationally documented or flagged, however, there is no specific requirement for this unless used commercially. In any event, they must comply with state and federal boating regulations as would any other watercraft.

Conclusion

Although the meaning of what constitutes a yacht is often in the eye of a beholder, it is usually well deserved considering the typical cost of ownership, operation, and maintenance.
