Definition
Sales Tax as it applies to boats is collected at the point of sale by a retail dealership on sales made within their respective state's jurisdiction. Such requirements and rates vary widely on a state by state basis. This includes certain exemptions such as making final delivery of the boat into another state or outside of territorial waters. Sales tax constitutes a major expense and may warrant the assistance of a professional tax accountant or attorney to determine if there are any legitimate avenues for reduction or avoidance.
