Vessel Documentation Registry Endorsement

WikiTagsWikiShare

BoatWiki - Definitions

Definition

A vessel registry trade endorsement can be defined in USCG Documentation terms as an entitlement to engage in trade activities directly between U.S. and foreign ports. This includes Guam, American Samoa, Wake, Midway, or Kingman Reef; and applies to any other operations for which a coastwise, or fishery endorsement is not required.

Meaning

Trade protection laws in the United States closely regulate the conditions under which vessels may conduct certain commercial operations within territorial waters. Although not applicable to registry operations, rules for other endorsements typically relate to where the vessel was constructed, a chain of ownership and the owner's citizenship status.

Context

USCG vessel documentation is required for vessels that engage in certain commercial activities within the United States. They must furthermore meet special requirements related to the type of activity involved. Compliance with such qualifications are manifested as trade endorsements as shown of the vessel's certificate of documentation.

Conclusion

Penalties for non-compliance with vessel documentation requirements can prove very costly and my even lead to impoundments. Owners of commercial vessels who are unsure of such regulations may wish to seek professional assistance in determining the appropriate trade endorsements.
