Maritime Mobile Service Identities
BoatWiki - Definitions
Definition
Mar 22, 2023 - Maritime Mobile Service Identities (MMSI) are used to identify a ship, yacht, or coast radio station. These are nine-digit numbers used by automatic identification systems located on the vessel or site involved. MMSIs are managed by the International Telecommunications Union in Geneva, Switzerland.
MMSIs are regulated in a manner similar to radio call signs.
Context
Although mostly utilized by seagoing ships, MMSIs may also apply to larger offshore yachts.
Conclusion
MMSIs are of little consequence to the typical boater, but may prove helpful in tracking yachts that employ such systems.
