Definition
The term "in rem" as it relates to maritime or admiralty law, means that certain actions or claims are against the vessel itself instead of the owner as an individual. These will follow and remain attached to the vessel regardless of changes in subsequent ownership. This gives rise to the meaning of "hidden liens."
