These are utilized for the identification of vessels, various nautical objects, meteorological conditions or in signaling messages. A vessel is considered as flagged whenever it is registered on the federal or national level of a particular countery.
Context
Most communications are now handled electronically with regard to larger boats. The same can be said for aids to navigation and the transmittal of weather conditions. There are, however, many circumstances where visual flagging comes into play, especially when it comes to the identification of a vessel's nationality or purpose.
Flagging
Flagging is the process of registering a boat, ship, or yacht on the federal or national level in a particular country. This entitles it to certain protections and privileges as extended by the respective country.
Conclusion
Communication flags are not typically of concern for most recreational boaters. However, there are a number of vessel identification, navigation, and weather flags that may be of relevance.
