Citizenship
BoatWiki - Definitions
Definition
Citizenship can be defined in boating terms as the status of an owner or operator with respect to legal recognition as a subject of one or more particular countries.
Meaning
Rights of citizenship are typically acquired by birthright or through a naturalization process. There are also circumstances where a person may have gained citizenship in more than one country. The citizenship status of legal entities is usually conferred by that of its shareholders, members, executives, or principals.
Context
Although citizenship is not typically an issue with respect to state level registrations, it is of major concern when it comes to USCG vessel documentation. It is also a factor when cruising offshore or within the waters of foreign country.
Conclusion
Although the National Vessel documentation center will accept declarations of citizenship without further evidence, this may not be the case when it comes to customs entry. Boaters should be prepared in advance for any such circumstances.
