Introduction
Boat title and registration records in Michigan are maintained by the Department of State. Boats and vehicles are commingled into the same database system. Although somewhat limited, this does provide an open online search for boats. Record printouts may be obtained by an owner or otherwise qualified party by submitting a boat record request form. Although designed for vehicles, this form also applies to boats. It is also reported that Department of State offices will provide telephone verifications on information shown on boat title or registration certificates in hand.
Access
Hull number searches can be accessed from the WikiLinks. Navigate to the Vehicle Search module and click on the Search for Liens and Brands link which includes boats. You can also check for abandoned boats in the same module by clicking on the Abandoned Vehicle link which also includes boats.
Data Provided
Data provided from these searches is limited to basic boat information, title type and issue date. It will also indicate whether there are any liens recorded and identify any reported salvage or damaged information. Complete details must be further obtained by submitting a record request.
