Internet Boat Search
BoatWiki - Databases
Introduction
Internet search engines are some of the most important and yet often overlooked resources for tracking down information related to a particular boat. Although they are not databases in themselves, their indexing capabilities serve a similar purpose. They can be searched by multiple criteria including a hull identification number, state registration number, USCG official number and even a boat's name if sufficiently unique.
Access
As with all internet searches, it's simply a matter of entering the appropriate term and hitting the search button. In order to optimize the search, however, only one item at a time should be included. Any additional qualifiers should be kept to a minimum and only provided if the item alone shows no results.
Data Provided
Whereas the findings may vary widely, they will most always identify the source and include a link to that site for additional information.
Conclusion
This kind of search is going to be a hit or miss proposition, but only takes a minute and is definitely worth the effort. If nothing else, it may offer clues that can lead to further research.
